Dentistry 101

A large part of the medical field is concerned with oral care, aka dentistry. However, and as described in the video, dentistry itself has many components that have different functions.

Most dentists are general practitioners who provide regular care. These are the dentists that are seen on an ongoing basis, hopefully at least once a year, and who clean and exam the teeth and gums.

Regular examinations and cleanings are important to a person’s dental hygiene, along with brushing and flossing.
General practice dentists also check for and, if necessary, fill cavities that form in the teeth. Regular dental care is of vital importance because tooth and gum disorders can exacerbate or even cause other health problems, including diabetes and heart disease.

Specialists in the field of dentistry concentrate on certain problems. Orthodontists are concerned with straightening the teeth and endodontists concentrate on treating problems within individual teeth. Periodontists are dedicated to treating gum disease, which if untreated can lead to tooth loss. A maxillofacial surgeon specializes in reconstructive procedures on the mouth and face.

Dentistry specialists are available to treat different conditions, but the best way to prevent problems is through preventive care.
