What You Need to Know About Plaque

Plaque on your teeth is probably not what you think it is. In fact, it may be even worse than you imagined. Most people think that plaque consists of bacteria that are bad for your teeth. However, this is only a small part of the story. Plaque itself is what is known as a biofilm.

A biofilm may sound complicated, but it is rather simple. A biofilm is a natural substance that houses bacteria and protects it from the outside environment. A classic example is the slime that you can feel on river rocks. This is not the algae itself, but rather, the film that is protecting the bacteria from a hostile river environment.

For years, every dentist has been stressing the importance of brushing and flossing. This certainly helps remove this biofilm. However, it may not be enough. Thankfully, there is a solution. If you make a concoction of 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon hydrogen peroxide, and 1/2 cup water, you will have a mixture that is perfect for removing the plaque. All you need to do is brush this mixture onto your teeth once a day before bed.
